My Dori Monson Rant
It’s been two weeks since KIRO unceremoniously dismissed Allan Prell as its morning host, provoking all sorts of reactions over at blatherWatch: . Be sure to read the 2 letters from Allan and the fascinating comments following. Many people are incredulous that Dori Monson wasn’t the one fired. Speaking personally, I had gone from listening almost exclusively to KIRO, except when there was a Mariners game on, to listening to Allan Prell in the morning, to Dori Monson until he infuriated me with his Neanderthal political feelings, and I turned to another station, and then back to Dave Ross later in the afternoon. Now KIRO has lost me completely, and sometimes I don’t even bother to return to Mr. Ross as much as I admire him.
We’ll discuss Mr. Prell more in a future posting, but today Dori Monson is the subject one last time (I hope).
It’s easy to understand why Dori likes President George Bush so much. They have quite a bit in common. First they both are proud Christians, although Dori doesn’t appear to be an Evangelical like George. They both believe strongly in the death penalty and have no second thoughts about it at all. As far as Dori is concerned, the more people killed the better, whether it be sex offenders murdered, 12-year old kids who throw bottle rockets or guys breaking into cars. It always seem to be justifiable for a cop to shoot a black man, whether he is simply parked in a car in a neighborhood he doesn’t live in, or a crazy man walking menacingly down the street with a sword.
The President and Dori both believe that the War on Terrorism is the single most important event this country has ever been involved with and the biggest threat we have ever faced by far. We are therefore justified breaking all our laws regarding habeas corpus and due process and all the principles this country has stood for, not to mention invading another nation, as long as it is in the name of fighting terrorism. Dori says he couldn’t care less that there were no weapons of mass destruction and that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. He constantly repeats the statement that there would be more dead Iraqis if Saddam was still in power than we have killed in the war. Even Bush hasn’t gone that far.
Dori Monson actually seems to be a nice guy. When he is not talking politics he is witty and engaging. Everybody who knows him personally seems to like him, even liberals like Dave Ross and Tony Ventrella. That’s one of the reasons it was difficult for me to totally stop listening to him. He is a trivia expert and loves to try different things. He loves life. He is fun to listen to.
He actually grew up within a few hundred yards of my house. I have spoken to most of the elderly people who lived around here when he was growing up. Almost all of them talk about how intelligent he was. But he doesn’t seem like he was the goody-two shoes that he is today. He had a mischievious streak as a kid, and was considered by some of them to be a trouble-maker. I suspect he was pretty much a normal kid.
The rest of his story is familiar to anybody who has listened to his show regularly., which is why I don’t hesitate to talk about it. He grew up extremely poor, had an alcoholic father, doesn’t drink alcohol (just like George, at least until recently), put himself through college, had a defining moment with his boss, Liberal icon Dorothy Bullitt, became a sportscaster and then landed this talk show about 10 years ago. He married his high school sweetheart, has 3 daughters, and seems to be the perfect husband and father, coaching a girls basketball team.
I liked him from the start. But he did seem to have this intolerant streak that has grown as he has gotten older. He has an abiding sense that anybody can make it in this country if they try hard enough and make the right choices, whether you be poor, black, or anything else. He doesn’t at all abide people making excuses because, after all, he was able to make it. Even though he was intelligent, and white, too, he feels anybody should be able to make it in this world and if they don’t, it’s because they made bad choices.
He seems to hate almost all Democratic politicians, especially those from Seattle. He says he doesn’t abide Republicans that much either. Over and over he says that the Republicans support the tyranny of big business, while the Democrats favor big government. All liberals become “extreme leftwingers” in his world. They are all socialists and believe in big government. They are ruled by “special interests,” which is defined as labor unions, environmentalists, and animal rights supporters.
He actually liked Bill Clinton and supported him during the impeachment drive. He even claims to have voted for Gore, although now he always points out how lucky we are that Gore wasn’t President during 9/11. He is convinced that Gore couldn’t have fought terrorism like Bush does.
Dori seems to be some sort of libertarian, but he is not consistent with that either. He does believe in no taxes, user fees, that the free-market should pretty much determine everything. He is convinced that government has a huge cache of money somewhere and that they don’t neeed anymore taxes. He constantly says that families have a line item for taxes, and they can pay no more. Taxes are a huge point of contention for Dori, although it is doubtful that he has any real money problems. He particularly hates mass transit and the like, especially our Sound Transit rail system that is being built, and the new Seattle monorail, which probably never will be.
One of his favorite guests is Zell Miller, the turncoat former Democrat Senator from Georgia. He also loves David Horowitz, Ann Coulter, and self-styled terrorism expert Edward Turzanski.
Like Bush he never travelled to other countries until recently. Predictably he hated France and French people.
He has a personal vendetta against some local politicians, most notably King County Executive Ron Sims. Early on Ron Sims decided not to appear on Dori’s show anymore, and although he made fun of it, it obviously made Dori really angry. He even jokes about his last words being something negative against Ron Sims. I have nothing against political give and take, but I believe Dori has made it a personal crusade against Sims, and it really is unseemly. He has absolutely no respect for people in pubic service, from local officials to government workers. Working for the government is the lowest class of people in Dori’s world.
Dori doesn’t seem to care that liberal Seattle really dislikes what he does; as a matter-of-fact he takes pride in it. It’s as if he has decided that his audience is the world of Seattle-haters, whether it be those on the east side of Washington State or those who are simply prejudiced against the big city and its liberal ways. He seems to be particularly nasty when liberal women phone his show.
I don’t really expect Dori to ever be fired from KIRO, at least not until his ratings plummet completely. He has become an institution, he’s very much a local boy, and he is charming. But count me as a new fan of Ed Schultz over on KPTK.
I wish him the best, but I am tired of him myself. Good riddance, Dori.

Nice takedown of the smug Dori Monson. His voice grates on me. His positions are illogical – completely emotional and unbalanced. I think there are so many people like him and he’s found an audience who though may not agree with him completely on each point – they identify with him strongly from the struggling small businessman to the angry working poor white guy.
As he ages he just turns into a more mean-spirited reactionary. Even if gets let go from KIRO, he’ll find a niche on some small radio station preaching to a narrow-minded choir.

Apparently Dori was ranting about the proposed statue of a naked man that will be in Seattle’s new sculture park. What a nincompoop.

I agree with just about everything in your Dori Monson rant. He has become a whiny rich white guy raving about how unfair the government is to rich white guys like him. He becomes more rabid with each passing month.
The above mostly senseless natter chatter has very little actual value.
Dori Monson is a very capable character and is a skilled radio guy. And he did it without government handouts, hence he is philisophically opposed to the idea of taxpayers (that would be you and I … by the way) paying for people who do not work very hard in order to succeed.
I don’t believe he has a personal vendetta against Sims … or any other politician. He just believes that fat cat politicians who spend way too much of taxpayer money should be called to account.
I would like to see Dori take on GWB for that same reason, as GWB is not a good steward of the people’s resources.
However Dori does works hard to be a good entertainer.
His tone level is high and he has the best of intention … usually … and he is an asset to KIRO.
Naysayers may go jump in the lake to cool off.

I actually think Monson is down the middle politically — in Seattle he only appears to be a raging right-winger. Stand him next to Hannity or Limbaugh, though, and he’s much more nuanced and reasonable.
He is also a far more skilled and natural broadcaster than most of the human wreckage remaining on KIRO. Erin Hart and Mike Webb just scream at people, NY Vinnie can’t put two sentences together… agree or disagree, the Monson show is consistently interesting, and with Dave Ross shoehorned into afternoon drive and enduring interruptions from the traffic chopper every six minutes, the Monson show is about all KIRO has left.
I agree with you, though, that his reflexive support of GWB is annoying. And he’s obviously a shameless shill — he must’ve traded out an entire house, doing endorsements of Gutter Helmet and spas and pet fences and Aamco transmissions in return for free stuff… you bet he doesn’t have any money problems with all the in-kind goodies he must be scoring. So the whining about taxes is ungracious ‘cos he’s way ahead of most of his audience.

You know it’s not so much that I am a liberal and Dori is a conservative, which he claims is not true by the way. It’s just that he’s heartless, vindictive, vengeful, judgmental, resentful, and above all else, very smug.
Isn’t it the far-right that usually resorts to name calling?
If you actually listen to Dori, you’ll notice that he’s not a full-on conservative, just fiscally conservative. Outside of that restriction, he attacks issues from several angles calling himself a libertarian, but not fitting completely into the libertarian thought process.
He thinks for himself, is many times reactionary, helping his listeners think for themselves. You may agree with him one hour, then totally disagree with him the next.
Its okay; it’s talk radio.
I certainly hope that indpendent thought is encouraged in the Seattle area and not cookie cutter, predictable talk-radio hosts.
I find it interesting that people (regardless of their political leaning) who come up against someone who is just as secure in their position as they are, get so irritated by not being able to get them to acquiesse to their point of view. Unable to change their minds, they resort to tearing them down with such vindictiveness. Appears as though there is enough smugness to go around.
I think whether conservative or liberal, those who tear into someone in the media are merely jealous of the fact they do not have the same platform.
I find that with the rare exception, all the daypart hosts on KIRO 710 have a tolerance for and allow rational debate. Monson and Ross have opinions, not exactly a surprise in the talk radio format! The problems usually occur when a caller has such a chip on their shoulder that when they cannot get the host to agree with them they get irritated (like they were really open enough to allow the host to change their mind)
If you’re liberal, why are you listening to and caring about a conservative talk show host? Same if you’re conservative listening to a liberal host. If you’ve identified their leanings, why not simply turn the dial?
True politicos know that there are precious few in the ‘undecided’ arenas….and they are not tuning into the rants and raves from either side. Everyone else is entrenched on one side or the other.
Once again, I don’t really think what we are talking about is difference of political opinions. I am talking about a guy who says really horrible things, like for instance that kids who make mistakes at a tender age deserve to be killed. I think Dori’s hateful personal tirades against Ron Sims in particular are uncalled for. I can remember him having the brother of the kid who was killed while trying to steal a car. He was totally unsympathetic to the poor kid. You don’t say things like that to people who just had a close relative killed even if you feel that way.
I am perfectly able to listen to opposing viewpoints if the person is polite and considerate of others. That’s where I object to Dori.
As for why we still listen to somebody who we disagree with, I admit that I ask myself that same thing. I think it is because a lot of us consider KIRO to be our station, there to serve the citizens of Seattle. We don’t like having to turn the knob back and forth when somebody else comes on. We don’t like being offended and having our station hijacked by somebody who will say or do almost anything just to increase his ratings. Is that naive? Perhaps. But KIRO used to be a respectable station that belonged to all of us and it is depressing to see it go downhill.
Simply put, Dori is a ray of Conservative sunshine is a dark, dreary mess of Liberal groupthink in the Seattle area. The man deserves kudos for bringing some air of intelligence to KIRO, which needs to counteract Kool-Aid drinkers like Dave Ross, and the rest of the Air America types. Thank God that Mike Webb self-destructed, and probably will take the rest down with the ship…leaving the only man with a brain, and a conscience on the air of 710.

I used to listen to KIRO a lot, but not much anymore. Occasionally, Dave Ross has an interesting topic. But it seems that Monson’s annoying voice is constantly interrupting the programming, pimping one product or another. His show is pathetic. I made the mistake of listening to him interviewing, or, more precisely, sucking up to Ann “Adam’s Apple” Coulter, the queen b—- of right-wing, vomit-inducing idiocy a while back. The horse-faced Coulter paired with the horse’s ass Monson were a good match. However, we all know what horses’ asses are usually filled with, and Monson is a constant reminder, so I’ve learned to turn–the dial, that is. –rob t.

I just stumbled on your blog and just need to say, I was just the opposite. I’d turn off Alan Prell and listen to All the rest of them. Alan was just too far off the charts for most of us, which is obviously why he got the axe. He very single handedly gave the “screaming liberal” a whole new meaning to me. Dori Monson, Dave Ross, and now Michael Reagan, have different political viewpoints but I get something from all of them. Sometimes I agree with one or the other, other times I disagree. The writer here even admits Monson is sometimes entertaining. Alan Prell was too bitter and vindictive to be entertaining, as obviously is the author of this blog. Lighten up.

The thing about Dori is that he is a short man and he has the short man syndrome.( not all short men have this syndrome..just the insecure ones like Dori) He needs to control and he makes fun of people “behind their back” rather than in front of their face. You all knew boys like him in high school and they really are very insecure inside. Even when he had Sims on in person he turned into Dorky Dori and he actually was polite to him. But most of the time he loves to slam and insult Sims without mercy. He also is obsessed with money and controlling it. Healthy minded people are content with having enough money to live comfortably ( seems he can) and are not so obsessed with whether they pay more taxes to help our quality of life. Not Dori..no way he wants anyone to have his money unless he controls who gets it. Its the same old mantra everyday on his show..he is so shallow in his thinking. I personally will not buy any product he endorses..he has no integrity.
He got worse over the years. Just like Tom Leykis did. Probably because that’s what people liked to hear.
I have listened to Dori for a number of years now, but it is getting harder to enjoy his show. He was quite entertaining at first, then he started getting into politics and developed a mean streak. He is not fun to listen to anymore. His rants against the P.I.,Ron Sims and mostly Democrats is wearing thin. I wish he would go back to more interesting topics and stop the mean spirited bashing of things he doesn,t care for. The only good part of his show anymore is the weekly segment of one on one against the nuns.
Dori does think for himself and is not afraid to take an unpopular stand on certain topics. I respect him for that. I too grew up semi-poor and never got any type of handout. I worked since age 10 (mowing lawns and picking berry’s) and all the way through College. I am successful now and really resent hearing people wine about their lives when they made their own bed. Too many people use their kids and other hardships to get people to feel sorry for them. 9 out of 10 times if you ask about their lives it is filled with irresponible selfish decisions. Ron Sims is a tax and spend total liberal and he feels good about it. Like he is Robin Hood or something. The truth is that politicians like him are actually the problem!
Joe, you sure sound like Dori, are you sure you aren’t him?
)
But seriously, I also worked hard all my life and put myself through college, but for some reason I don’t resent those people who weren’t able to do that for themselves. Some people simply have a harder time dealing with the struggles of taking care of themselves; it’s perhaps a psychological defect but it doesn’t mak them bad people. Actually some of the poorest people probably try the hardest and have the most difficult and low-paying jobs.
I also understand that Dori says all those horrible things about Ron Sims that you are parroting, and again I totally disagree. Ron Sims has dedicated himself to public service and doesn’t deserve Dori’s abuse.
Davet,
You sound like a pretty nice caring person, and I commend you for that. I just believe that most people do not have psychological defects and are just victims of “bad decisions” based on immediate rewards. Like having kids to young and not choicing the correct mate etc… It is those I have a hard time giving simpathy too. The kids are the ones that I feel badly for. They will no doubt grow up with the same kind of irresponsible habits and most likely end up in the same unfullfilling predicament. And politicans like Ron Sims pray on these type of people by taxing hard working americans and redistributing the money and feeling so good about it. What he is doing is keeping these type of citizens down and relying on government help for the own lives. And he does it for votes. I have been an accountant for years and have been told by countless business owners that they would never hire a government or public service employee because their pay expectations are so high and they do not know how to work on a tight budget. So when you say he has dedicated himself to “public service” that actually does not impress me. I have done volunteer work for years and spend some of my own money and expect nor receive any pay for it. I do not get “free parking” and discounts everywhere I go. And I do not make as much as Ron Sims. I won’t even get into the retirement benifits issue. And by the way, I am not a supporter of this Bush and actually liked President Clinton. Moderate at Large.

You have revealed more about your own narrow-mindedness, than Dori’s faults. Why do so many Seattlelites have such a problem with direct talk, and the truth?
Like many bitter, white, middle aged right wing guys (the phenomenon crosses national boundaries, btw) Dori Monson mostly plays on the fears of others. He lives off cheap cracker jack box populism, using typically
Driven by anger and frustration, he’s also a walking contradiction. Monson pretends to be a good Christian, but revels in war (when it’s going well) and has no problem making fun of obviously mentally ill or medically deranged people on the air. I’ll never forget the time Monson interviewed a seriously mentally ill woman outside one of the conventions back in 2004 – totally mocking the voices she was hearing in her head, and dragging the painful “interview” on as long as possible. Same goes for any drunk or raving left-leaning nut who might call in on his show – Dori treats them like they are “the typical liberal” asking all kinds of non-relevant questions to drive his point home; raving right-wing nut? Monson just pooh-poohs those guys. It’s a typical Limbaugh tactic, but I also think it’s clear Monson needs to knock others down in order to feel good about himself.
Also bizarre is Monson’s snobbish complaints about white, drooling trash who shop at places like Costco – I don’t listen to Monson that often, but I’ve heard these “more refined than thou” statements on more than one occasion. Tell me how a “man of the people” can also be an elitist snob?
The icing on the cake occurred recently, when Monson did a story on some kid who got shot after throwing eggs at an SUV. Monson’s theme was basically “are you thinking what I’m thinking” (that the kid deserved it) but never came right out and said just that.
When a kindly older gentleman called in to scold Monson for using his position as a host to make such an inference, Monson BECAME UNGLUED. He started ranting about how this guy was trying to make him succumb to “politically correct” fascism – you could practically hear the spit hit the microphone. After berating this guy for a while, Monson finally declared it was this kind of “politically incorrect” stuff which made him so popular.
Needless to say, Monson never mentioned the fact he had muzzled himself on the issue, and never actually came out and said what he wanted to say.
Talk about a disturbed and self-deluded individual.
I turned him off for good about 6 months ago. He has become progressively worse over the last 6 years, and now seems to have no real value set, instead he rants about this and that, and increasingly spends his time yelling into the microphone. And his accent (frog speak, of whatever that is) has become worse and is not bearable. Since I found Ed Schultz I haven’t been back. It’s nice to hear a host not scream and rant while being completely inconsistent.
Allan Prell was a joke. I think he was a joke even to himself. I listened to him perhaps half a dozen times in some sort of state of bizarre amazement. Any business concerned with success would soon realize such a “product” was not selling. Yes, Dori Monson can be too sarcastic, smug, etc. at times. But for the most part he is fair (offers opportunities for response) and I have witnessed him changing his opinion after talking to more informed callers. What more do you want?
Gee, if Dave Ross likes him you can’t argue with THAT endorsement, HE WORKS with him, so did Ventrella, what do you expect them to say and anybody that still supports bUsh after all the lies, all the deaths of Iraqis, over 600,000, the destruction of a country, little electricity, sewage, few hospitals open, that don’t even function. Only a degenerate would put party over HUMANITY, a politician over HUMANITY. So he must like secret prisons also, he must like prisoners kidnapped sent to countries to be tortured.
On a lighter note, he asserted one of the most ridiculous comments on air, while pimping a brand of dog food, ” I didn’t know good nutrition was important to a dog’s health” WHAT, you don’t have that much common sense.
Also obviously Monson doesn’t have a clue about Iraq’s privatization planned BEFORE the invasion, by bush&Bremmer, to sell off their banks and allow them to be 100% foreign owned, as well as their telecom, water, sewage etc. He must think it’s cool, that bush is looting Iraq, and establishing a PERMANENT occupation.

This posting is from one simpleminded jackass. Of course Dori Monson has an opinion, he’s paid to. Of course the positioning is to instill controversy, because it generates ratings and dollars.
It’s no different than the self policing family law industry in Washington, where any claim from one parent against another goes – because the conflict generates PROFITS. Forget truth. These firms are in conflict because it’s a revenue stream.
You’re an idiot.

In response to Bob Benson above –
Why do so many Seattlelites have such a problem with direct talk, and the truth?
Because the truth would reveal the “victims” for what they are, and undeniably show the rabid powermongering that exists behind “special interest” factions being marketed as “politically correct” options.
Abusing power as the “visctim” is the ultimate power position.
Truth destroys the facade.
Look at Guardian Ad Litems like Elizabeth Selleck. A failed attorney, hard core lesbian who openly states there is no use for males – is appointed time and time again to “assess” a poor mothers “victimization”.

Dori is a fabulous entertainer, wonderful father, amazing friend and one hell of a basketball oach.
He simply chuckles at what people have to say about and keeps going the same way every day. Dori rules KIRO other shows can hardly compare to his.
This rant is just giving Dori more attention. Good work. He will just get richer and mayber whiter…:)

Someone should look into all the payola and kickbacks Dori Monson recieves from his PHONEY endorsments he does all during his “talk show”. I doubt that it is just coincidence that Mr. Monson is a “customer” of all the product/services he “endorses” on KIRO. Any investigator should be able to uncover possible criminal activity reagrding this blatant payola.

Your interpretation of Dori’s opinions only shows that you are not intelligent enough to understand pragmatic straight talk without inserting your own personal racism and bias. You would do Dori and his sponsers a favor by tuning out because you probably wouldn’t be able to understand their ad copy.

Insightful post: amazing that people still take time to comment years after you wrote it
Dori came to the Woodinville high graduation last Wednesday to give the commencement address: the audience was really split about having him between people who love him and people who think he’s a knuckle-head.
However he gave a solid speech, ‘kept the focus on the students, and made his remarks short and upbeat. He stressed (as he does on the show) taking control of your own life, having explicit goals, being competitive, and surrounding yourself with good people. Good messages for the assembled students, and they liked him a lot.
I don’t like his politics: I absolutely agree that he has an unreasonable bias against government workers and public transit, and uncritical faith in free markets. I like his unwavering faith in positivism: anyone can make it if they are willing to work hard, if they aren’t then they deserve to lose to someone who is. However, he fails to recognize that smart work and cooperation can be as much a competitive strategy as working more hours.
He is witty and intelligent, and I just sigh and spin the dial when he rants off on one of his favorite targets.

This article was so “spot on.” For years KIRO was my main radio station. I wasn’t all that fond of Monson, but I could tolerate him. After listening to the Dori Monson/Ann Coulter love fest earlier this year, I pretty much decided that I was done with KIRO, even though I love the Dave Ross show. I won’t even patronize companies that use Monson in their advertising. And, as a Vietnam era veteran, and a post Vietnam National Guard veteran, I find it especially galling that this little weasel who never served his country has the fortitude to blithely spout his intolerant crap. Maybe Dori should ask his wife if he can have his cajones back so he can saddle up, get on over to Iraq, and do his part. But I won’t hold my breath until it happens.

Dori doesn’t fit the Seattle market. He doesn’t hold himself to any standard of truth, often lying on the air to get a rise out of listeners. He used to be more middle of the road but has become mean and cynical over the years. I’ve pretty much stopped listening to KIRO because of him- I can’t stand to hear his voice anymore.

Dori’s perfect for the obfuscation Entercom broadcasting sells. I’m actually surprised he hasnt risen further in the conservative radio world, because he sounds reasonable but is still utterly convinced of his suburban troll think. I’ve called in a few times when he was on, started sounding like him to draw him in and then went sideways on him. It was fun. Other than that, I never listen to KIRO anymore. Now its off of AM, but AIr America isnt. Dori is just another loser happy to spend trillions for war and corporations, but wont spend a dime on people or society. He a boring dinosaur, and the fact that he looks part middle-eastern convinces me he’s a self-hater.

Count me as an ex Dori Monson listener as well. What did it for me, was tuning in on my way to work just hours after they announced Senator Kennedy had passed away. Dori Monson’s topic of his show was all focused on a negative take down of Senator Kennedy with the Chappy incident etc. Ok, all facts are on the public record and is fair game, but some incredibly poor taste on Dori’s part to have this as his discussion topic hours after the guy died. If he was at least as Fox news would put it was “fair and balanced” maybe he would of mentioned all the good things he has done in his career…….When Dori hits age 65, is he going to reject Medicare because it was legislation from Senator Kennedy?

I used to listen to Monson during the 90s as well. He was always very outspoken and excitable, but back then he was at least more even handed about it. Sometime around the 9/11 attacks he went over to the darkside and became another right-wing nut jobber.
If Monson really thinks what he says he’s got to be an idiot, but I seriously doubt he believes half of it. If he really voted for Al Gore in 2000, but now claims the global warming is a hoax, something’s amiss. He probably saw right-wing hate talk as the road to high ratings, and started slanting his rantings in that direction. I’ve lost any respect I ever had for him, and never listen to his program anymore.
